Cape Cod Classic

Hailing from New England on the northeast coast of the USA, Cape Cod is a style never goes out of fashion. It has an authentic, welcoming aesthetic that fits into most decors, even modern, and works particularly well in kitchens and bathrooms.

This is the exact look that these homeowners were looking for when it came to fitting out their brand new Gulf Harbour home, just north of Auckland.

The whole design and build process was very collaborative, says designer Sheryl Stuart. The owners were involved at every stage, from supplying a detailed initial design brief, through to choosing the final colours and detailing on the cupboard doors.

Although it has the authentic look of something from a bygone era, this kitchen is crammed with all the latest products and materials. Some of these include; soft-close drawers, clever storage solutions, engineered stone benchtops, and energy efficient appliances.

The only break from the crisp, white-on-white palette comes from the sleek stainless-steel fronted appliances, which have been seamlessly integrated into the design. An oversized fridge-freezer and freestanding oven are both statement pieces, evidence that the homeowners are keen entertainers.

That said, much of the working area in this kitchen is hidden from direct view in a large pantry area that extends off to one side of the space. Here, a huge amount of useful storage has been shoehorned into every available nook and cranny.

Back out in the main kitchen, the large entertainment island, complete with feature pendant lighting, takes centre stage. As per the homeowners brief, there is plenty of room here for friends and family to chat and relax.

On either side of the range, a matching pair of wall-hung, glass-fronted display cabinets gives the back wall of the kitchen symmetry and formality. A third display cabinet is built into the wall, off to the right, shielding the fridge from view.

The cabinetry is capped with scalloped cornices, containing concealed up-lighting. This detailing lends extra drama to the space, particularly in the evening, and finishes off what is a perfectly balanced entertainer’s kitchen in the Cape Cod style.

But wait, there’s more…

While this kitchen is impressive on it’s own, Mastercraft Kitchens didn’t stop there… they also designed and created the cabinetry and benchtops in the stunning bathroom and functional yet stylish laundry. Working with one designer and manufacturer for these key areas ensured the Cape Cod style effortlessly flows throughout this home, and the same or complementary surfaces were able to be used.
